New York State Police engraved wood shield plaque with badge number 3570

Police Retirement Gift Ideas: Custom Engraved Shields, Flags & Badges

When someone finishes a career in law enforcement, a mug or a gift card doesn't say what you want it to say. The gifts that get kept, displayed and talked about for years are built around the real thing: their badge, their name and rank, their years of service.

Built by law enforcement, for law enforcement. Every piece below is made to order, one at a time, from real wood.

1. A replica of the badge they carried

The most personal retirement gift is often the simplest: a wooden replica of their exact badge, sized for a wall, desk or office shelf. You approve a free digital proof before anything is cut.

Every badge is two true ¼" layers of basswood with matte acrylic inlays behind the cut-outs, bonded with permanent adhesive paper instead of glue, and finished with a UV-protecting clear coat.

2. The NYSP Wood Shield

For New York State Police retirements, the Custom Engraved NYSP Wood Shield is the piece we build more than any other.

  • True 11.5" x 11.5" shield layout
  • Law Enforcement Blue or Deep Purple tribute option
  • Shield number, name, rank, and optional hire and retirement dates

Those dates are what turn it from a nice-looking shield into a piece that tells the story of a career.

3. A Thin Blue Line flag

A flag is a bigger statement piece than a badge. The Custom NYSP Thin Blue Line Flag and the Custom Agency Thin Blue Line Flag are cut to true U.S. flag proportions, engraved with the department's badge, and can carry a name, dates or a unit on the stripes. Read more about the flags.

4. Small additions that mean a lot

Matching engraved slate coasters pair naturally with a badge or shield, and are an easy way to round out a group gift or stretch a department's budget.

When to order

Most of these are ordered for the retirement ceremony, a department send-off, or as a surprise from family near the last day. Because everything is made to order, order as soon as you have a date.

  • Standard turnaround: 2–4 weeks
  • Rush Production: 1–2 weeks on many items
  • Free shipping on orders of $125 or more
  • Current timing is always on the Current Lead Times page

Working toward a specific date? Message us before ordering and we'll confirm we can make it. Browse everything in one place in the Sheriff & Police Retirement Gifts collection.
